Shopping for the Lovable Nerd in your Life

In our household, there are my two boys, my daughter, my lovely hubby, and myself.  Of the 5 of us, 3 are Science/Math nerds:  especially my hubby and my older son.  This actually presents me with some challenges when it comes to finding Christmas presents.

Today is Cyber Monday.  Here are some links I found that I thought might be helpful if you find yourself scratching your head when you are looking for that "perfect gift" for the nerd in your life.

Cafe Press has some great "educational" t-shirts at this link
Here's a sample

Cafe Press also has come awesome engineering t-shirts and gear at this link  http://shop.cafepress.com/engineering
Here's a sample

In our household, our engi"nerds" have very dry senses of humor!
If you know someone like that, the check out www.despair.com
They have all sorts of posters and such.  Here's a poster your engineer might appreciate

Architette Studio at etsy.com has some really cute cards and such for the architect/engineer in your life
Check out this etsy store  http://www.etsy.com/shop/architette

My guys also LOVE pie.  Perhaps the female geek in your life would like this cherry pie necklace at etsy store  http://www.etsy.com/shop/FabricationUnlimited?ref=seller_info

I'm pretty psyched, now, to find some gifts for my guys!

Too Much time on my hands: Free Holiday Card Templates

One of the things I love about the holiday season is receiving cards along with the family "newsletters" that often accompany them.  It's a great way to end a hectic day:  kicking back and reading what everyone has been up to.   It's also great to get a family photo to see how everyone has changed since you have last seen them.

Kim, at http://kim-toomuchtimeonmyhands.blogspot.com, has found a way to marry all of this into a great package:  holiday card templates so you can add that special family photo(s) for everyone to enjoy.  Here's an example of what she has posted on her blog.

Kim found quite a few links for her followers to find an array of templates.  Click on the link below to find more.

Kim has lots of other neat ideas.  Why don't you become a follower too?

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Crafting, Oh My!

It's been a busy week since I last posted anything.  First off, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  My family and I have so many things to be thankful for:  friends, family, shelter, food.....oh, the list goes on! So here is what I have been up to.  First off....Oh, the food!

After the food, and the clean up, it was.....

However, this year, I think it was more like "Grey Thursday into Black Friday"!  It was crazy out there but I did manage to find some good gifts and some good prices!

Once my "purchased" gifts were tackled it was time to put on the thinking cap and ....

start getting all the homemade goodies/plans in place so that all those special someones in my life can get a personalized homemade gift.  I can't wait to show you some of my creations.  It has been rainy here and so the lighting is poor for photography. That should change here soon!

Cool Thanksgiving Pins from Artsy Fartsy Mama

Okay, one of the blogs I follow is Artsy Fartsy Mama and she posted some amazing pins (from pinterest).  I am still learning how all this works but I have to share this link with you.

Artsy Fartsy Mama's Thanksgiving Pins

Here is a picture of the first one to give you an idea of how awesome these are!

Ins't this cute!  She's got some other amazing pins...SSSOOOO CUTE!  Check it out! :)

Woo Hoo!

My daughter is a member of the Ohio University Marching 110 (marching band).  You may have seen them on youtube (LMFAO's Party Anthem).  Anyway, their band program is pretty amazing...but Ohio University's football program is still growing, so the 110 doesn't travel to all of the away football games.  However, they do travel and do performances to increase their (and the University's) exposure.  Things they have done include:

Performing in Carnegie Hall
Performing in the Tournament of Roses Parade
Performing in the Macy's Day Parade
Performing at various pro-football games (Bengals, Steelers, etc)
And Much More!

Well, my husband I just got the most amazing phone call from her last night (the band had their banquet last night).  They had an announcement of a trip they will be taking March 17, 2013.  Guess where?  Let me give you some clues!

What holiday is March 17?

Yup, St. Patty's Day.  Okay, clue number 2, what do many towns do to celebrate?

You guessed it, have a parade.  Okay, now your third and final clue.  Where would St. Patrick's Day be HUGE?

Yup!  Dublin, Ireland!  The Marching 110 will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland in March 2013 to perform in their St. Patrick's Day Parade!  And Ohio University's School colors are green and white.....coinsidence? Perhaps.  Go 110!  :)

Oops Rasta Cowl

My local yarn shop (LYS) just received a shipment of malabrigo rasta.  I LOVE the colors of malabrigo yarns and I had a 10% off coupon so I picked up a few more skeins for presents.  Although I enjoy creating homemade gifts for those that are important to me, I get bored if I do the same pattern too many times.  So you know what that means? Yes, another pattern to share with you!  I hope you enjoy.  This cowl is long enough to wear simply as a cowl but it can be doubled up to keep your neck warm for those times when it is chilly outside.  I used the color Archangel.

Oops Rasta Cowl

This pattern is a quick knit for those times when you want to give someone you love a homemade gift but time is short.  The drop stitch creates an enlogated stitch that showcases all the beautiful colors of malabrigo rasta!  This project is knit from the inside out. In other words, you will cast on and that will be the center of the cowl.  Then, every round you knit/purl you will add stitches to either side of this cast on. Normally a drop stitch is done by knitting the previous round's knit stitch and the yarn over is dropped.  In this pattern, you will purl the the previous knit stitch, creating a garter ridge that in this mobius helps to create the illusion of this cowl being reversible.

Materials
1 skeins Malabrigo Rasta, 150g (82 m/90 yd )
1 US 17 or 12.75mm 40"/100cm circular needle
1 Stitch Marker

Techniques
Knit Stitch
Purl Stitch
Yarn over
Purl Drop Stitch (Purl the previous knit stitch and drop the yarn over. It will create an elongated stitch)
Mobius Cast-On and Set-Up (refer to Cat Bohrdi's book "Treasury of Magical Knitting" or her youtube video  http://youtu.be/LVnTda7F2V4)
Binding Off (both knitwise and purlwise)

Gauge
2 st to the inch in stockinette stitch

Finished Dimensions
50 inches in circumference, 6 inches wide
Abbreviations
MCO  Mobius Cast On
K  Knit
P   Purl

YO  Yarn over
Directions
MCO 74 stitches
Round 1 K all stitches  You are now ready to slip your marker and begin round 2

(NOTE: When you see the marker on the bottom cable, you are only halfway around round 1.  You will have completed round 1 when the marker is back on your needles - it will be like knitting 158 stitches)

Round 2  K1 YO, repeat until you have completed the round (don't forget to do the last YO)
(NOTE:  The YOs will double the number of stitches.  It will be tight)

Round 3  P all the knit stitches and drop all the YOs (You are back to your original number of stitches)
Round 4  Same as Round 2
Round 5  Same as Round 3
Round 6  Bind off Knitwise

Weave in all your ends.

This is a picture of how your cowl should look upclose.  The center reverse stockinette is what appears when you complete round 1.
Then the enlogated stitch is waht appears when you drop the YO and the garter ridge is what appears when you purl the knit stitch on round 3
This picture is the COMPLETED cowl so you have two  rounds of drop stitch

Here is a picture of my son's girl friend wearing this cowl doubled up!

Enjoy!  This pattern is 4you!

Christmas Songs

It's a week until "Black Friday" to be followed by "Small Business Saturday" and "Cyber Monday".  Thankfully we have 6 weeks until Christmas so there is still plenty of time to get all those homemade goodies completed!

Along with all of the baking, crafting, shopping and wrapping, I have such fond memories of  all the Christmas/Holiday specials from my childhood.  One of my favorites was "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer".  Here are a couple of clips from Youtube.

I also love Christmas carols.  It bring back the memories of music class while I was in elementary school and then all the performances in band and orchestra while in high school.  One of my favorite instrumental holiday tunes is, "Sleigh Ride" by LeRoy Anderson. While looking around on Youtube, I found two performances by "Straight No Chaser".  They are AMAZING!!  Take a listen.

Wow, I am in the holiday  mood now. How about you?

Read, Knit, Repeat........and Photograph: Blocking Mizzle

Just found a new blog with a beautiful shawl pattern. Isn't is gorgeous?

Here's the link

Read, Knit, Repeat........and Photograph: Blocking Mizzle

I think this will make a beautiful gift for someone special! :)

slow cooker brisket from artsy fartsy mama

I don't know about you but when I'm busy crafting gifts (and knowing I have looming deadlines), things like cooking, cleaning, and other housework  is met with, "UGH!"  Also, it is so easy to become lazy and default to the "let's order a pizza".

A great solution to this is the crock pot.  I usually use mine exclusively for soup (and I do make a mean batch of soup).  I really haven't experimented with anything else.  Today, I did stumble upon what looks like an amazing recipe from one of the blogs I follow.  Here's a picture.

Doesn't this look deslish?  Here's the link so you can make some for your loved ones.

I think I'll try this out this week!  Lindsay has some amazing ideas on her blog.  Why don't you check her out at http://www.artsyfartsymama.blogspot.com/ or better yet, become one of her followers!

Two Christmas gift ideas from Too Much time on my hands

One of the blogs I follow is, "Too Much time on my Hands".  Kim has some great craft and repurposing ideas.  This week she has posted two easy, economical Christmas crafting ideas.  Here's the first one

Aren't these amazing?  I think my daughter; the music education major, may want to make some of these for her professors!  Here's the link so you can make them as well!

Too Much time on my hands: Easy Filled Glass Christmas Ornaments

Here's the other idea she posted.

Isn't this garland cute?  I was thinking that you could probably modify this for other occasions as well.  Here's the link for this craft if you're interested.

Too Much time on my hands: Rustic Garland Tutorial

I'm getting really pumped for the Christmas season and Kim's ideas are ones that I feel I can add to my "to craft" list without overwhelming myself.  I'm looking forward to seeing what else she posts this holiday season.  Check out her blog at  http://www.kim-toomuchtimeonmyhands.blogspot.com/ or better yet, become one of her followers!

Have a great Wednesday!

Ohio Theater

I am SO excited!  I get to see the Ohio University Marching 110 at the Ohio Theater in Columbus,Ohio!  I also just learned that my daughter will get to do one of the dances!  AWESOME!  I posted one of their youtube videos a week or so ago!   It's my November 8 posting entitled, "I'm Back".

Here's some pictures from some of their performances.

Many people get the Ohio University Band and the Ohio State University bands confused, which is understandable.  OSU is know as "The Best Damn Band In The Land"  while the Ohio University Band is known as "The Most Exciting Band in the Land" and they have both earned these titles.  In fact if you look at college band rankings that go beyond just the huge conferences (Big 10, SEC, etc) and include smaller schools like the MAC conference, OU and OSU are always ranked side by side.  If you'd like to learn more about OU's band, here is a Wikipedia link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ohio_University_Marching_110

I am so happy for my daughter not only being a member of this great organization but also that she is achieving the success in the goals she has set for herself!

I can't wait until tonight!  :)

Advent Boxes

I realize that Thanksgiving is our next holiday, not Christmas.  However, Thanksgiving is all about good food and fellowship with those you love while Christmas is about giving gifts to those you love.  So, for all of us that give creations to our loved ones, we have to begin our planing and designing now.

I don't know about each of you, but one of the challenges I face is distance.  My family is spread across the USA from coast to coast (Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon and Washington).  As a result,  I don't see everyone often which makes gift giving a real challenge.  I am married to an engineer and so I have been taught that sometimes the best solutions come when you think totally outside the box.

I believe it was about 4 years ago that I was struggling with the "what to give/make for everyone" in mid November.  I came up with the idea of and Advent Box.  What I did was put 24 small gifts in each of my "family boxes".  These gifts were each individually wrapped with a note inside that had some sort of personal message.  For example, one day may have one individual packet of hot cocoa for each member of the family and a note saying, "with all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, take time today to sit and relax and remember you are loved".  The outside of this daily gift would have a date that this was to be opened, say Dec 15.  The gift on Dec 25 would be a bit more substantial, yet small and usable, (like a calendar).

To keep this project under control (cost wise) and to help ensure that it was a well received, I created some parameters for myself.  For cost control, purchased items were to be no more than $0.25 or $0.50 per day.  If I had made food goodies in my kitchen, these were to be given during the first 7 to 10 days (Dec 1-10).  Also, food gifts were limited to a serving or two per family members (i.e. 1 or 2 cookies per family member).  Finally, unless there were small children in the family that I would include a bit more to be opened on Dec 25, I would limit the contents to fit into a flat rate shipping box to keep postage costs under control.

The first couple of years, I kept my advent boxes limited to readily consumable food items or useful items that would be used (i.e. birthday candles).  After a couple of years, I found myself struggling to come up with new ideas.  To rectify this, last year, my daughter and I put our heads together and decided on giving themed Advent boxes.  Our theme?  Spices.  We purchased spices in bulk online and broke them up into small quantities (spices are MUCH cheaper this way.)  Then, we decorated lunch bags for daily gift bags.  In each bag, we put approximately 3-4 Tbsp of a spice and labeled it.  We also included a recipe that used the spice.  It was a big hit!

For your budgetary numbers, we purchased 1 pound of each spice and spent $250 on spices.  I had enough spices to create all 8 Advent Boxes, have some of each spice for my home, and give almost complete sets of spices to 5 other families.  So although the initial cost of the spices seemed really steep, each gift was actually about $20 before shipping (and these are family gifts!).  I purchased my spices at

www.myspicesage.com

Their spices are good and fresh and a nice value.  Also, you don't have any shipping costs in the US if you purchase I believe $40.  My Spice Sage also has rotating free spices (if you spend I believe $25 they will include a free spice in your order).

Now, I am back at the drawing board thinking about what to make/send out for 2011.  Ideas?  Also, I am thinking about changing this idea into an Epiphany Box.  Thoughts?

Another 1 Skein Malabrigo Rasta Cowl

Okay, I am on a roll.  Trying to get some of these Christmas gifts made so that I am not so frantic in December!  I LOVE Malabrigo Rasta.  The colors are so beautiful, it has a soft hand, and it is such a quick knit!  I also think mobius cowls are fun.  Here's my newest creation.

1 Skein Rasta Eyelet Edge Mobius Cowl

This pattern is a quick knit for those times when you want to give someone you love a homemade gift but time is short.  The stockinette stiches showcase the beautiful colors in the yarn while the yarn over edges add a bit of interest!  This project is knit from the inside out. In other words, you will cast on and that will be the center of the cowl.  Then, every round you knit/purl you will add stitches to either side of this cast on.  Also, the first half of the cowl will be knit as if knitting on the right side of the fabric (knit side)and the second half of the cowl will be knit as if from the wrong side of the fabric (purl side).

Materials
1 skeins Malabrigo Rasta, 150g (82 m/90 yd )
1 US 17 or 12.75mm 40"/100cm circular needle
1 Stitch Marker

Techniques
Knit Stitch

Directions
MCO 62 stitches
Round 1 K62 P62.  You are now ready to slip your marker and begin round 2

(NOTE:  when you reach your stitch marker but it is on the bottom cable and you will begin  P62)
Round 2  Same as Round 1
Round 3  Same as Round 1
Round 4  Same as Round 1
Round 5  Same as Round 1
Round 6  P62 K62

(NOTE:  when you reach your stitch marker but it is on the bottom cable and you will begin K62)

Round 7  (K2tog  YO) 31 times, (P2tog YO) 31 times
Round 8  Same as Round 6
Round 9  Same as Round 1
Round 10  Same as Round 6
Bind off  first 62 stitches knitwise and the remaining purlwise

Weave in Ends
I had approximately 6 yards of yarn leftover.  Also, you will have what looks like "join" where stockinette meets reverse stockinette.  you can either have this be where the mobius folds and so you will see only the stockinette or reverse stockinette side.  Or you an have this "join" in the back of your neck and where the mobius folds, you will see half stockinette and half reverse stockinette.

Hope you enjoy!

1 Skein Malabrigo Rasta Project - Double Moss Mobius Cowl

Wow, I can't believe that Thanksgiving is just 2 weeks away.  That means it's time to get hopping on all those handmade Christmas gifts.  If you are a knitter or crocheter, Malabrigo Rasta is a beautiful kettle dyed bulky weight yarn for those quick knit gifts.  It's a bit pricy but with 90 yards (82 meters) and using large knitting needles, one skein makes a great gift in about 2 or 3 hours!

Here is the first gift I have completed.

1 Skein Rasta Double Moss Stitch Mobius Cowl

This pattern is a quick knit for those times when you want to give someone you love a homemade gift but time is short.  The texture from the double moss stitch really enhances the beauty of the yarn while making this completely reversible!  This project is knit from the inside out. In other words, you will cast on and that will be your center of the cowl.  Then, every round you knit will add stitches to either side of this cast on.

Materials
1 skeins Malabrigo Rasta, 150g (82 m/90 yd )

Finished and Flops!

Well,I finished my Progressive Needles Knit Along (KAL) shawlette.  Here's what it looks like.

It turned out beautiful!  This is my first Christmas handmade gift!  I think the recipient will LOVE it! The color is great and the yarn has a beautiful drape.  Unlike most shawlettes that are lace knit, this one showcases textured knitting.  Go to http://www.knitpurlhunter.com/ to find instructions, video lessons, and more information!

As beautiful as this finished project is, I had a serious flop yesterday.  I attempted to make pumpkin cripsy rice treats and although the flavor was good, my marshamallow/pumpkin mix was way too wet and created soggy/stale pumpkin rice treats.  Epic failure.  That just means I'll have to try again!

I'm Back!

I've been unable to blog the last week due to my husband being out of town and taking the laptop with him!  Aside from my sweetie being away, I had a very busy week myself.  My daughter is a member of the Ohio University Marching 110 and they are amazing.  Anyway, Ohio University Bobcats were playing the Temple University Owls at OU last Wednesday evening.  Along with this game, my nephew was visiting my parents.  I thought it would be great to collect my nephew and take him to see the OU/Temple game.  This involved a lot of driving but it was worth it!  It was an amazing game (OU won 34 to 31).  And the band.....speechless!  If you haven't seen the Marching 110 perform, they have a video that has gone viral.  Here it it.  Take a peak!

Are you shuffling?  Go Bobcats!

While my nephew was visiting we also stopped by Jungle Jim's in Fairfield, Ohio (the greater Cincinnati, Ohio area).  If you've never been there, you need to stop by.  Here's a pick of their international area.

Here's what their website says about Jungle Jim's.
